Sloppy Joe Recipe

An eye-level photograph of a classic homemade Sloppy Joe sandwich packed with a rich, glossy ground beef mixture on a perfectly toasted brioche bun, plated on a white ceramic dish.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs lean ground beef (80/20 or 85/15)

  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced

  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely diced

  • 1 cup classic tomato ketchup

  • ½ cup water

  • 1 tbsp light brown sugar

  • 1 tsp yellow mustard

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 6 high-quality hamburger buns

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for toasting)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, diced onions, and diced green bell peppers.
  2. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes, breaking the meat into small pieces with a wooden spoon, until the beef is fully browned. Drizzle off any excess fat.
  3. Turn the stovetop heat down to medium-low.
  4. Stir in the ketchup, water, brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder until the meat is evenly coated.
  5. Let the mixture simmer uncovered for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is thick and glossy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. In a separate pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Place the hamburger buns face-down and toast until golden brown.
  7. Spoon the warm meat mixture generously onto the toasted buns and serve immediately. Enjoy!
